Newsbrief: Apple reports that developers netted over $10 billion in revenue from the Apple App Store in 2014, noting that developers have now earned over $25 billion in revenue from sales on the storefront since it launched in 2008 and it saw its largest sales day ever on January 1st of this year.
Games have historically generated the lion’s share of revenue on Apple’s App Store, rendering this a nice bit of news for mobile game makers. As part of the announcement, Apple took special pains to call out Ustwo (Monument Valley), Sirvo (Threes!) and Hipster Whale (Crossy Road) as notable members of an “inspired segment…the newest generation of independent game creators.”
The company took a number of steps last year to amplify the presence of games on the App Store, including launching the Apple App Store Indie Game Showcase and making a handful of changes to boost discoverability on the storefront.
